US Facebook users can now gift their friends free Bud Light and Budweiser on their birthdays due to a new digital trial which will be rolled-out across the whole of the US next year.

Anheuser-Busch, the brewer of Budweiser and Bud Light, this week launched the pilot scheme which was created by digital agency AKQA.

The beers will be redeemable in bars and restaurant throughout Chicago and across Denver, upon the verification of an online voucher. Each claimant will have to also show a state-issued ID to prove their age.

Lucas Herscovici, vice president of consumer connections at Anheuser-Busch, said: “Beer is the original social network. This new campaign focuses not on a gift certificate or credit, but on bringing people together to celebrate life's most anticipated moments.

“Whether you're toasting your birthday, a job promotion, an engagement, or simply the end of a long work week, we want to encourage everyone to bridge the physical and digital worlds by allowing you to send your friend a beer over Facebook.”

The scheme’s gift delivery and fulfilment is powered by Gratafy, whose merchant integration technology platform enables in-venue mobile redemption.

Anheuser-Busch, of late has focused on reaching people via digital media. This latest collaboration between AKQA and Facebook's Creative Shop will be rolled out throughout the US in 2015.

Earlier this year, Budweiser released the 'Puppy Love' Super Bowl ad which is one the year's most viewed commercials, raking in over 51 millions views on YouTube.
