Retail giant Amazon has announced it will be opening a new office in East London’s Silicon Roundabout area - a move which will bring the UK tech sector 3,000 jobs.

The ‘Principal Place’ office will house over 5,000 employees, partly made up with Amazon’s existing 1,700 UK staff who will be relocated to the building when it is completed in 2017.

The 600,000 sq ft site, which is being developed by Canadian developer Brookfield Property Partners, will be 15 stories high with shops, cafes and eateries also implemented upon its completion.

As a result, Amazon will provide a boost to London’s reputation as the “go-to” city for digital business in Europe, especially in the Shoreditch area where a significant number of start-ups are currently based.

Christopher North, Amazon UK's managing director, said: “We have already invested well over £1bn and created more than 7,000 permanent jobs across the UK.

"To support our continued growth in the UK, we have secured this exceptional building giving us the capacity to hire thousands of new employees in London in the coming years, in addition to the thousands of permanent roles we will create across our UK fulfillment and customer service centres."

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, said: “Our city is the perfect home for top tech talent and I am very pleased that Amazon has confirmed their intention to create thousands of new jobs at a major new base in east London.

“We are proving time and again that we have the right places and people to support this vibrant sector.”

London has seen significant property investment from the online sector after Facebook last year also started construction on a new UK headquarters, enabling it to house over 1,000 employees.
