The BBC has worked with Liverpool-based creative agency Splinter to produce a series of animations helping school pupils explore the topic of World War One in its centenary year.

Briefed with making the topic of war accessible to a young audience, Splinter came up with the concept of telling the story of each famous WW1 figure via an illustrated comic strip.

Drawing inspiration from 20th Century comics such as Dan Dare, the eight animations tell the tales of Lord Kitchener, Walter Tull and Edith Cavell to name but a few.

The animations, which are now available to view on the BBC site, use the same style as the Famous People games Splinter producer for BBC Schools in 2013.

A range of resources aimed at primary school teachers accompany the illustrated series.
