The BBC has carried out some frantic post-production work to Saturday’s episode of Dr Who following concerns that a beheading scene drew uncomfortable parallels with ‘recent news events’.

Filmed back in February Saturday night’s episode is believed to have depicted a fight between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham which culminated in the grisly scene but producers had second thoughts after watching various news reports emerge.

Named the Robot of Sherwood it is the third Dr Who episode to be screened in a new series starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman.

In recent days two US journalists have been beheaded by Islamic State militants in Syria whilst a London grandmother was said to have been beheaded by a madman in her garden.
