McDonald’s to roll out NFC mobile payments
McDonald’s is set to become fully accessible for NFC mobile payments from 15 September, according to an internal memo.
While some restaurants in the fast food chain have been equipped with the VeriFone NFC system for a while, the memo suggests that instillation and training will now take place in all branches.
The move from McDonald’s comes only a month after the company announced a raft of digital improvements – including a new food-ordering mobile app which is being tested in Georgia, US.
Other moves in the digital revamp by McDonalds - who celebrates its 40 year anniversary in the UK this month - include a "variety of digital music and entertainment experiences”.
A survey carried out by YouGov at the end of 2013 discovered that only 35 per cent of UK adults are aware of NFC-enabled devices, and only 22 per cent have ever used one.
This may be set to increase, however, as rumours abound that the Apple iPhone 6, set to be revealed on 9 September, will be a mobile wallet.
