Technology firm Apple has edged out Google to be crowned as the world’s most valuable brand after being valued at a hefty $117bn, just $10bn more than its long-time rival, in a survey conducted by The Telegraph.

Sourcing data from Millard Brown, BrandFinance and Interbrand the paper found that both technology firms were the only companies to boast brand valuations stretching into the hundreds of billions of dollars with IBM, Microsoft and Coca-Cola completing the top five with $76bn, $71bn and $65bn respectively.

These heavyweights are joined in a top 10 table by GE, McDonald’s, Samsung, Amazon and Toyota – highlighting the enormous global clout wielded by today’s technology firms.

Prominent for just missing out on the top table were a number of other US telecoms giants, notably AT&T and Verizon with rankings of $62bn and $58bn respectively, whilst banking giant Wells Fargo notched up a figure of $42bn.
