An issue of 'Action Comics #1', featuring Superman, became the world’s most expensive comic book on Sunday after being sold for a record-breaking £1.93m on auction site eBay.

The first-ever edition of the DC comic sold on eBay for the world record-breaking figure after it was found to be in near perfect condition by analysts.

Seller Darren Adams and eBay donated one per cent of the sale to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for spinal-cord injury and paralysis research.

The copy of Action Comics #1, the comic which debuted the iconic Man of Steel, arguably the most recognisable illustrated character ever created, is one of only 50 known to exist.

It received a limited circulation of 200,000 issues and was first sold in 1938 for a mere ten cents.

The sale beats the previous comic book value record set by actor Nicolas Cage who sold another Action Comics #1 issue for £1.27m in 2011.

The paperback, which was rated by the CGC comic book grading scale at a 9.0, is the highest quality issue in existence. It was reportedly “near perfect” after being stored in a cedar chest for four decades.

This comes after DC's rival comic book company Marvel earlier this summer said it will be increasing the diversity of its heroes, after introducing a female Thor and a black Captain America.
