Instagram has launched a new app, Hyperlapse, which will allow the creation of time lapse videos, even if you are moving.

Hyperlapse from Instagram is available for download at 6pm today, GMT, in the iTunes store, and aims to rubbish the idea that you need to keep your camera or phone still while making a time lapse film.

In a blog post, the Instagram team said: “Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilisation technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.”

To use the app, you tap once to begin recording, and then tap again to stop, with the ability to play back the video from its usual speed or up to 12 times faster. When ready to save, the video creator just needs to tap the green check mark.

Instagram's video launch comes only a week after Vine, the rival creator of short tap-to-record videos, announced an update which allowed videos to be imported and users to 'mix' two videos.
