WhatsApp hits 600m active users a month

WhatsApp, the mobile messaging app owned by Facebook, has reported that it now has 600m active users a month.

Taking a dig at companies who only reveal the number of registered users – and not the number of active users – CEO Jan Koem said: “Now serving 600,000,000 monthly active users. Yes, active and registered are very different types of numbers...”

In December 2013, before the acquisition by Facebook, WhatsApp because the most used mobile social messaging platform of choice.

At this point, it had 100m active users, a figure which rose to half a billion in April 2014.

WhatsApp currently does not offer any advertising, and only charges $1 a year after one year of free usage.
