With Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling set to debate the independence referendum on the BBC tonight, Betfair is placing odds on who will lead to the most conversation on Twitter.

According to the Betfair Exchange, Alex Salmond is favourite at 1/10 to fuel the conversation on social media, whilst Alistair Darling is sitting at 5/1.

Naomi Totten, PR executive at Betfair, commented: “Twitter will be alive with opinion around the next Scottish Referendum debate and Betfair will be the first betting company offering odds on Twitter mentions.

“We’ll also be processing Twitter data that calculates the positive and negative sentiment within each mention with the intention of providing customers an interactive experience of an important political issue.”

The 2 September debate, which will be shown on STV, will now be simulcast on the ITV website, the channel has revealed.
