Microsoft stalwart Steve Ballmer has announced his decision to stand down from Microsoft’s board in order to spend more time overseeing the LA Clippers basketball team.

The unexpected move means Ballmer, who led the firm for 14 years, has now severed all ties with the software giant, although he remains its single biggest shareholder.

In a letter explaining his decision to his successor Ballmer wrote: “I had not spent any time really contemplating my post-Microsoft life until my last day with the company. In the six months since leaving, I have become very busy… [Given] the multitude of new commitments I am taking on now, I think it would be impractical for me to continue to serve on the board, and it is best for me to move off.”

Ballmer confirmed though that he intends to hold onto his 333m Microsoft shares for the ‘foreseeable future’ and will remain on hand to advise his successors as need be.

In a written response Nadella said: “While your insights and leadership will be greatly missed as part of the board, I understand and support your decision.

“As you embark on your new journey, I am sure that you will bring the same boldness, passion and impact to your new endeavors that you brought to Microsoft, and we wish you incredible success. I also look forward to partnering with you as a shareholder.”

Rather than take up golf Ballmer is pursuing an active retirement having bought the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team for $2bn and he is also pursuing a teaching role.
