Yahoo News has apologised for spreading misinformation around an Ebola outbreak after hackers penned a rogue tweet alleging that an Ebola outbreak in Atlanta had infected 145 people.

The message read: “BREAKING: EBOLA OUTBREAK IN ATLANTA! Estimated 145 people infected so far since Doctors carrying the disease were flown in from Africa.

The infiltration occurred on Sunday evening when the compromised tweet was issued, although Yahoo swiftly regained control of the account and deleted the rogue message.

In a tweeted apology yahoo News said: “Earlier, an unauthorized tweet with misinformation on Ebola was sent from this account; please disregard that tweet."
