Fully one in three British workers have admitted to purchasing goods online whilst they should be working according to research conducted by charitable price comparison site, Give as you Live.

Drilling down into this data the charity found that, on average, each employee to indulge in such practices squanders 24 minutes browsing shopping websites, adding up to 96 hours of lost productivity over the course of a year.

These figures vary markedly around the country however with workers in Leicester spending 45 min and 44 secs engaging in online shopping whilst those in Nottingham spend just 14 mins and 43 seconds.

The most popular time for such purchases to be made was found to be Monday at 11:00 with Britons spending an average of £70 per person during the working day. Benefitting most from these furtive purchases are supermarket chains Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s as well as thetrainline, Virgin Trains and Groupon.

Steff Lewis from Give as you Live, said: “It’s often said that there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done, something our figures confirm. Working nine to five is how most people make a living, but it also means we have less time to do important ‘life admin’ like shopping. Now we can see how Brits are coping – by shopping on the boss’ dollar.”
