The Scottish Referendum debate, which is set to be screened exclusively in Scotland this evening, should also be shown in England, according to 70 per cent of Londoners.

In a poll carried out on behalf of The Drum by YouGov, 66 per cent of 1,977 adults surveyed across the UK believe the debate, being aired on STV at 8pm, should be shown in Scotland, England and Wales.

In Scotland, 60 per cent believe it should be broadcast on TV across the UK, while 20 per cent disagreed.

The rest of the South (66 per cent) Midlands/ Wales (68 per cent) and North (64 per cent) were all in agreement that the debate over Scottish Independence should be made available for all to view on TV.

Conversely, 11 per cent said the debate between Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling, the leader of the Better Together campaign, should not be shown in England and Wales.

Meanwhile only seven per cent of Londoners said the debate should not be screened in England compared to 20 per cent of Scots.

Despite the high percentage of UK adults expressing that it should be shown to all, only 51 per cent said they would be "totally likely" to watch it compared to 41 per cent who said they would be "totally unlikely".

A spokeswoman for ITV, which has a network agreement with STV, said: "ITV will screen the 8-10pm debate live, in the area where our viewers have a vote in the question under discussion. Viewers in Border Scotland will be able to watch the debate on Freeview. The debate will of course be covered as a news story in our news programmes broadcast to the whole of the UK."

Viewers outside of Scotland who wish to watch the debate can do so via a livestream on the STVPlayer as the broadcaster lifts its Scottish postcode requirement for the night.
