Aldi’s share of the grocery market has increased from 3.7 per cent to 4.8 per cent, edging closer to matching Waitrose’s share of 4.9 per cent, according to the latest figures from Kantar’s Worldpanel.

In the 12 weeks to 20 July 2014, Aldi’s sales also grew sales by 4.8 per cent to £1.2bn.

Meanwhile, two of the ‘big four’ saw their share of the market drop.

Morrisons fell to 11 per cent from 11.5 per cent while and Tesco dropped from holding a 30.3 per cent share of the market to 28.9 per cent.

Asda and Sainsbury's managed to maintain their market shares at 17 per cent and 16.6 per cent respectively.

Aldi’s biggest rival in the discount retail space, Lidl, similarly noted an increase in market share from from 3.1 per cent to 3.6 per cent.

Earlier this year, Aldi scooped first place in the UK’s top 10 brands as it entered YouGov BrandIndex’ ranking for the first time along with rival Lidl.
