Sky sets sights on virtual reality future
Broadcaster BSkyB has made a tentative foray into the nascent virtual reality sector with a $400k equity investment in Jaunt, a Californian technology firm which has made a name for itself in the field of cinematic VR.
The cash outlay follows an earlier $350k investment made in December 2013 and highlights the growing interest mainstream broadcasters now have in the developing field.
Jaunt has developed specialised mathematical techniques to undertake the complex calculations required to allow content producers to realise their wares in an immersive VR experience which, crucially, can be delivered using existing production software.
This is delivered courtesy of a 3d stereoscopic camera system which can capture 360 degree aufio and visual environments simultaneously.
