Amazon is set to release a credit card reader which will connect to smartphones to carry out payments, documents have suggested.

Internal Staples documents, obtained by 9to5Mac, suggested that the reader will cost $9.99, and may be in US stores from 12 August.

The obtained documents also suggested that the product will be alongside brands such as Square and PayPal.

It is unsure if the technology will tie into the Wallet app for smartphones that Amazon launched last week.

Amazon reported a loss of $126m for Q2 of the year, and predicted that sales would fall in the coming quarter.
