The mobile record was also broken during the first week of the World Cup with the broadcaster reaching almost 8.1m unique mobile devices.

From the World Cup kicking off June 12, to the conclusion of the Open on July 9, there has been a total of 96m unique browsers - two thirds of whom were based in the UK with the rest international.

The BBC received nearly 25m live video requests across the month. The World Cup, Wimbledon, the British Grand Prix and the Open saw 15.9m, 8.1m, 369,000 and 1.5m live video requests respectively.

On the social media front, the BBC Sport Facebook page amassed 1.25m new likes during the World Cup, becoming the biggest UK sports broadcaster Facebook page with 4.8m likes. Similarly, the broadcaster’s Twitter account rose to a figure just shy of 2.5m followers.

Chris Condron, head of product at BBC Sport, said: “We’re extremely proud of these latest figures as they show how growing numbers of audiences are enjoying BBC Sport’s expert coverage from around the world.

"We’ve been evolving our technology to provide live digital coverage across any device since London 2012, focusing on what audiences really want: their choice of the BBC’s best live TV, radio and text content from major events at their fingertips, alongside an increased range of interactivity and social media."

The BBC Sport app for mobiles and tablets has been downloaded over 4.5m times in the UK.
