One of our many sessions at The Drum Live explored the role photography has to play in storytelling by gathering creatives from SapientNitro, Bats in Belfries, Precedent and the Telegraph to discuss their immediate and very real responses to images in front of a live audience.

According to host Mel McVeigh, director, Opposite Days, by caputuring the “instant thoughts of a person viewing a photo for the first time,” the ‘Reel Stories’ session demonstrates to brands that it’s “not just what the photographer or art director thinks, it’s about how we absorb and translate images into our own thoughts.”

With photography supplied by Getty Images, each of the four panellists – Jane Austin, head of UX, the Telegraph, Rochelle Dancel, partner, Bats in Belfries, Cheyney Robinson, creative director, SapientNitro and Tori Winn, creative director, Precedent – took to the floor for five minutes to share their unedited reaction to a number of images from themes Getty has been exploring as part of the RePicture campaign.

Immediately after the session we caught up with three of our panellists and McVeigh (video below) to find out more about what the power of photography can mean for brands and how it felt to share the stories of family, friends, illness and loss conjured up by the images to a room full of strangers .

You can see what The Drum and our associate editors managed to create in just one day in The Drum Live magazine, available from The Drum store. Subscribers can download the issue as a PDF.
