Neil Patrick Harris is Heineken Light’s new spokesman in a quirky ad showing the refreshing taste of the low calorie beer while poking fun at US advertising regulations forbidding alcohol consumption in commercials.

The ad by Wieden and Kennedy, New York, shows the ‘How I Met Your Mother’ star describe the perfection of Heineken Light before desperately trying to take a drink on camera.

This is amusingly forbidden by the ad’s director because of US advertising rules.

After trying to find a work-around for the perplexing regulations, Harris eventually drinks the beer off-screen, saying: “Apparently, there are rules about drinking beer in commercials, so I’m drinking it over here. Tastes good.”

The ad mocks a voluntary guideline created by the Beer Institute which forbids rapid, excessive or involuntary consumption of alcohol.

The 99 calorie beer recently won the 'Best Tasting Light Beer' award at the 2013 World Beer Championships.

The Dutch brewer, which has saw healthy sales as a result of higher marketing investment, said the ad campaign will be supported by online content including behind-the-scenes video shorts.
