Papers devote front pages to Ukraine MH17 jet crash
Today’s front pages are dominated by the unfolding events in Ukraine which took a turn for the worse yesterday with the shooting down of a commercial passenger airliner.
The Daily Telegraph shows a shot from the scene of the crash, illustrating smoldering wreckage overseen by men in fatigues. It quotes reference to the incident as a ‘terror attack’. The broadsheet also reports one rebel commander boasting on a social networking site about shooting down an aircraft that had entered “our skies”.
The Financial Times leads with a piece that firmly points the finger of blame at Russian sponsored rebels operating within the territory, after an unidentified missile brought the aircraft down over a pro-Russia region.
The Guardian opts to front its coverage with the headline ‘Murder in the sky’ in its coverage of the disaster, including an evocative shot of one of the aircrafts upended landing gear.
The tabloids are typically more combative in their coverage of the incident with The Sun labelling a scene of devastation with the words, ‘Putin’s missile’.
The Daily Mail meanwhile leads with a warning, quoting an American official warning that ‘There’ll be hell to pay’ over the catastrophe.
The Daily Express focusses on the human cost of the tragedy, pointing out that 295 people were killed when the jet was downed, including nine Britons.
The Times plumps for ‘Blown out of the sky’ for its cover, it highlights the scale of the disaster for Holland which lost 154 citizens in the incident.
Devoting its front page to one striking visual of mangled metal littering the scene the Independent proclaims simply ‘Shot out of the sky’.
The Mirror describes the unfolding horror as ‘Slaughter at 33,000ft’ highlighting the cruising altitude of an airliner that was thought would have kept it out of harms way.
