The UK government along with Unicef has released the ‘world’s first’ Instagram documentary to highlight harmful female genital mutilation (FGM) practices ahead of the inaugural Girl Summit this month.

The crowd-sourced ‘Freedom Is’ film contains submissions from across the world in response to a social media campaign which asked the question ‘Freedom is?’.

Released ahead of the Girl Summit on 22 July, the film explores the impact of restricting freedom, especially for girls who are subjected to forced marriage and FGM, and encourages viewers to sign the Girl Summit Pledge to help end the practices.

‘Freedom Is’ will be screened in front of world leaders and global policy makers during the summit, which aims to mobilise domestic and international efforts to end FGM and child, early and forced marriage ‘within a generation’.
