Japan’s reputation for weirdness has been affirmed following the arrest of artist Megumi Igarashi, on the improbable account of being caught emailing a digital representation of her vagina for people to 3d print copies.

Working under the pseudonym of Rokudenashiki, ‘good for nothing girl’, the artist had mounted a YouTube crowd funding request, finding 30 individuals willing to put up 1m Yen toward realising her zany idea of building a kayak based on this template – a piece she called the ‘pussy boat’.

Local media report that Igatashi fell foul of obscenity laws, an accusation the artist strenuously denies – insisting that no images of her vagina were sent in exchange for cash and that the scanned data was not recognisably obscene.

Igatashi hasn’t been shy in using her own anatomy to make a name for herself in the past, creating a series of ‘decorated vagina’ sculptures that make use of the word ‘man’ - a play on the Japanese term ‘manko’ for vagina.
