Marylebone Cricket Club has notched up 10,000 more followers after hosting the MCC v Rest of the World match at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 5 July with the #teamsachin and #teamshane campaign.

The 'home of cricket' saw hundreds of thousands engage in the event online

The campaign encouraged supporters to pledge allegiance to a team captain, either Indian Sachin Tendulkar or Australia’s Shane Warne with the hashtag #teamsachin or #teamshane respectively.

The club’s Twitter account, @HomeofCricket, received 10,000 more followers during the six week campaign, and over 87,000 tweets have included the #MCCvRoW, #teamshane, #teamsachin and #Lords200 hashtags. #MCCvRoW trended worldwide during the event as MCC celebrated the 200th anniversary of Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Posts coming from fans across the globe - including celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.

Ian Treseder, digital manager of MCC, said: “We started building interest in this match back in May by asking supporters to pledge their allegiance to #teamsachin or #teamshane and excitement was building through our YouTube, Facebook and Twitter channels as we confirmed more and more players.

“We had unrivaled access to some of the greatest names in the game, the majority having very large followings across social media. The footage we filmed with the players using GoPro cameras provided some groundbreaking pieces, not least the videos from Adam Gilchrist’s innings which gives cricket fans a unique insight into what it’s like to face fast bowling in front of a full house at Lord’s.

“Owning content that featured these great names allowed Lord’s and MCC digital to achieve our highest ever traffic, reach and engagement statistics.”

Additionally, the ‘Sachin Tendulkar walks out to bat at Lord's’ video has had just under half a million views on Youtube.
