Google has acquired US music streaming service Songza, in a deal reportedly worth over $39m.

Announcing the news on its website, Songza said: “We can’t think of a better company to join in our quest to provide the perfect soundtrack for everything you do.

“No immediate changes to Songza are planned, other than making it faster, smarter, and even more fun to use.”

The acquisition of the three year old company comes following rumours that YouTube was creating a music streaming subscription service to take on Spotify.

"Over the coming months, we’ll explore ways to bring what you love about Songza to Google Play Music. We'll also look for opportunities to bring their great work to the music experience on YouTube and other Google products,” Google announced.

When revealing why it made the acquisition in a Google+ post, the company said: "They’ve built a great service which uses contextual expert-curated playlists to give you the right music at the right time."

Songza is available as Android and iOS apps, and sees a team of people creating playlists to match different activities and weather conditions.
