Egypt defies global pressure over jailed Al Jazeera journalists

Egypt has defied international pressure to release three Al Jazeera journalists jailed on suspicion of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood, an outlawed political group.

An Egyptian court doled out the harshest sentence possible to Australian Peter Greste and two Egyptian journalists, all of whom have been locked up in Cairo’s Torah prison since December.

Representations to Egyptian president Abdelfattah el-Sisi for clemency have fallen on deaf ears with the leader saying: “…we must respect judicial rulings and not criticise them even if others do not understand this".

All three journalists are expected to appeal.
