The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has issued safety advice to local and international journalists covering events in Brazil during the World Cup.

Protests: Brazilians are angry at the money spent on the World Cup

The beginning of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has been accompanied by fierce protests by people angry at the amount of money spent by authorities on the event. Police fired tear gas at protesters as the situation intensified just hours before the tournament’s opening game between Brazil and Croatia.

The IFJ said it had received reports of journalists being injured while covering events in Sao Paulo. The IFJ’s Brazilian affiliate, the National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ) is monitoring events and offering help and support to journalists in need.

Beth Costa, IFJ general secretary, said: “We call on authorities and citizens in Brazil to respect the rights and freedoms of media covering the World Cup or reporting on ongoing unrest.

“We also advise journalists reporting on events to stay safe at all times and to avoid dangerous situations.”

According to the IFJ, CNN producer Barbara Arvanitidis was forced to seek hospital treatment for an arm injury on the opening day of the World Cup while others suffered minor wounds as a result of stun grenades thrown by authorities to disperse protesters.

Television studios have also been attacked. ITV’s studio was hit by rocks during the opening game of the tournament.
