JD Sports Fashion Plc has announced that its chief executive officer, Barry Bown, will be stepping down from the Board of the company with immediate effect.

Bown, who has been employed by JD Sports since 1984, took the decision to step down following 30 years at the company, but will continue to work as a consultant.

Peter Cowgill, executive chairman, said: "The Board would like to thank Barry for his valued and considerable contribution to the growth and progress of the business.”

The retailer said that there would be no replacement for the role due to the “considerable development and strengthening” of the JD Sports senior leadership team over the last decade.

In addition to owning JD stores, the company runs Bank, Millets and Blacks stores.
