Netflix is reportedly investing in a £100m series charting the Queen’s six decades on the throne and has brought on board Peter Morgan, writer of 2006 film The Queen.

Deal: Netflix is investing into more original content

Morgan – who also wrote The Audience - will work with Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry on ‘The Crown’, and according to the Guardian, it’s understood to have beaten the BBC and ITV to secure the series, which will be made by independent production company Left Bank Pictures.

Netflix has had recent successes with investment into original content for Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards and prison drama Orange is the New Black.

Earlier this week, Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix, predicted that the rise of online video content could prompt the demise of traditional TV advertising.

Also this week, Vodafone announced a partnership with Netflix to offer customers a six-month Netflix subscription if they sign up to its 4G services.
