Facebook is creating a short video message app, named Slingshot, which will challenge Snapchat.

The social networking site is rumoured to have been working on the app for several months, following Snapchat turning down a £3bn offer.

It is believed that the creation of Slingshot comes after the failure of Poke, an app which saw images and videos disappear after ten seconds, which Facebook removed from the Apple app store this month.

According to the Financial Times, the Slingshot project is being led by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and will allow video messages to be sent with just a few clicks.

It is unknown, however, if and when the app will be released.

A GlobalWebIndex survey discovered that Facebook’s active user base is decreasing, while Snapcat recorded a 67 per cent increase in its users, with WhatsApp up 30 per cent.
