Twitter has appointed Nick Pickles as public policy manager for the UK.

Previously director of the Big Brother Watch pressure group, Pickles said: “The past two and a half years have been an incredible experience, working with some remarkable people across the political spectrum and making major contributions to a range of debates about privacy, civil liberties, surveillance reform and freedom of speech.

“I look forward to the many successes yet to come. At a time when the future of privacy and free speech online are high on the agenda it is very exciting to be joining Twitter.”

Pickels is also a music photographer, and has had his work featured in magazines such as Rolling Stone and NME.

The announcement comes the day after Twitter reported a net loss of $132m during Q1 of 2014.
