Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond will deliver a keynote speech at the inaugural Scottish Newspaper Society conference in Glasgow this week.

First Minister: Alex Salmond

Salmond is expected to address issues such as press regulation at the event on 24 April, which will open with a speech from Lord Black of Brentwood, a key figure in the set-up of the press industry’s Independence Press Standards Organisation (Ipso). Ellis Watson, chief executive of DC Thomson publishing, will also deliver a keynote speech at the conference, which is organised in association with First ScotRail.

Scottish Newspaper Society director John McLellan said: “We are delighted the First Minister is able to join us for the first of what we hope will become a major fixture in the Scottish media calendar.

“It is obviously a historic year for Scotland politically, but it is also a crucial year for the newspaper industry as a whole and we are looking forward to hearing the First Minister’s views on a wide range of topics affecting our industry.

“It is a very strong line-up and the response so far to this new even has been excellent.”

The conference will also host two debate sessions featuring Scottish Information Commissioner Rosemary Agnew and Professor Philip Schlessinger of Glasgow University.
