Tony Gallagher, previously newspaper editor at the Daily Telegraph, has been named as joint deputy editor at the Daily Mail.

Gallagher will share the role with current deputy editor John Steafel. The news was revealed by Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre in a message that said: "I'm delighted to announce that Tony Gallagher is returning to the Daily Mail as joint deputy editor."

Having previously been head of news at the Daily Mail before he moved to the Telegraph in 2009, Gallagher said he was "delighted", adding: “My huge admiration for Paul Dacre is well known and I am greatly looking forward to joining his outstanding team."

Gallagher was fired from the Daily Telegraph in January as the company looked to "reinvent the way it works".
