Culture secretary Maria Miller has tendered her resignation as culture secretary after being vilified in the press for over claiming on expenses.

This faux pas was compounded by a perfunctory apology to the Commons and criticism from the independent parliamentary commissioner for standards over her ‘attitude’ to the inquiry.

Downing Street confirmed that Miller had bowed to pressure and asked to relinquish her role in a letter penned to the Prime Minister this morning following, which David Cameron accepted.

Miller was originally ordered to repay £45,000of expensed used to fund her parents’ home at taxpayers expense by the independent parliamentary commissioner, but this was subsequently reduced to just £5,800 by the Commons Standards Committee – to the outrage of many.

In an apology to her Basingstoke constituents Miller said: "I am devastated that this has happened, and that I have let you down.”

Speculation has already begun as to who will be Miller’s successor, with pundits throwing the likes of Esther McVey, Minister of State for Employment and Anna Soubry MP into the frame.
