A 3D printer could give a beakless penguin in Warsaw zoo a new lease of life after Polish scientists intervened to see if they could help.

Project: A 3D printer could be the key to solving penguin's problem

Bartek Jarkiewicz found out about the penguin’s plight after approaching the zoo to see if there was any opportunity to provide his MTT Polska firm’s 3D printing capabilities. When the zoo asked if it was possible to create a new beak for one of their penguins, he set off on the project.

Soon, scientists from Omni3D, a Polish producer of printers, made a 3D scan of a dead penguin’s beak to provide an idea of the dimensions needed and attempts to create the first beak, made from hi-tech eco-plastic, will take place next week.

The project follows a similar one in 2012 when a 3D printer was used to create a prosthetic beak for a bald eagle in the US.

As experimentation with 3D printers continues, there has been widespread speculation over how the devices could change the nature of the marketing industry.
