Gordon Robertson, Edinburgh Airport’s director of communications, has been announced as the new chair of Marketing Edinburgh, replacing Alan Johnston who has stepped down after three years.

Robertson has served on the Marketing Edinburgh board for a number of years, but said that “an exciting new chapter is underway for Marketing Edinburgh”.

He commented on the private-public partnership between the organisation, Essential Edinburgh business improvement district and City of Edinburgh Council after they recently came together to launch a £1m campaign designed at attracting local residents back into the city centre.

“The This is Edinburgh campaign also set a new precedent for private business and public sector working together for the overall benefit of the city.

“This private-public partnership is something I’m passionate about developing further over the next few years. We need businesses to play a proactive role in supporting and shaping Scotland’s capital. Those who want to attract tourism, investment, students, shoppers or those that want to give their staff a great place to live, will all be encouraged to participate at the level that they can,” he said.

He added that Marketing Edinburgh has, for the first time, a council-approved comprehensive three-year business strategy, clearly outlining objectives and targets for the organisation.

Johnston, who has steered the organisation since its inception in 2011, is retiring to concentrate more on his commitments in further and higher education.
