With 25th anniversary celebrations for the internet in full swing online marketplace Rakuten has taken the opportunity to dust off its crystal ball in an effort to foresee what the next quarter century will bring for online retail.

Rakuten’s retail vision for the 2020s outlines how online retail is likely to evolve over the next decade, including being able to browse window displays from anywhere on the planet.

Such a scenario is predicted to become possible thanks to the emergence of smart watches, web glasses and other mobile devices which, at the touch of a button, allow people to browse virtual window displays from anywhere in the world.

Rakuten also predicts the emergence of a single ‘super secure shipping passport’ to amalgamate the profusion of existing profiles and loyalty cards.

Shingo Murakami, MD of Rakuten’s Play.com said: “Fuelled by the Internet of Things, retailers will soon understand the shopping journey more completely than ever before. However interpreting and reacting to vast quantities of retail data from various channels will require retailers to unite the traditionally siloed divisions of purchasing, marketing and web development. To thrive retailers must develop a cross-division collaboration culture, one which sees online and offline sales as complementary and intrinsically linked and develops a shopping experience based on these multi-channel findings.”
