LinkedIn has passed a significant milestone with news that the business-orientated social network now boasts in excess of 15m UK members, a 50 per cent increase from the 10m people who had signed up by September 2012.

Breaking the figures down by profession for the first time the social network revealed that in the UK it currently counts 12,530 journalists, 48,679 solicitors, 374,711 engineers, 4,083 farmers and 7,090 hairdressers amongst its number.

Unsurprisingly the majority hail from London with the next nearest urban centres being Birmingham with 284,000 members, Manchester with 250,000 and Reading with 213, 000. They join 277m members worldwide whose ranks have swelled recently on the back of an influx of students and new graduates seeking employment.

Josh Graff, director of LinkedIn marketing solutions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa commented, “We are thrilled to reach this milestone. It reinforces our position as the number one platform for brands to engage an influential and affluent professional audience. We’re encouraged by the growth we’re seeing among younger professionals joining the platform. They’re the most socially savvy and engaged generation to join the professional workforce and are the business decision makers of tomorrow.”
