Paramount faces backlash after blocking Twitter Top Gun account
A painstaking Twitter recreation of 80s Tom Cruise vehicle Top Gun has been forced offline by lawyers representing film studio paramount, over concerns that the project breached its copyright.A takedown notice issued by the studio saw Twitter delete the account of user @555uhz who had been posting subtitled still frames from the movie at a rate of two per hour to recreate the film in micro-blog form.Despite the Twitter version being heavily edited and non-commercial the Paramount notice stated: “No one is authorized to copy, reproduce, distribute, or otherwise use Top Gun without the express written permission of Paramount.”The aggressive stance has sparked a backlash on the social network, with many decrying the crackdown as a badly handled public relations misstep with the long-awaited sequel waiting in the wings.
