LinkedIn, the professional social networking site, launched a Chinese language version of its website yesterday (24 February) in a move to boost its growth in the country.

The low key announcement came via a blog post on the site, in which the company said the beta version of the website would offer a more localised service.

The post read: “The new Simplified Chinese website will broaden our reach to the country’s more than 140 million professionals who currently represent roughly one in five of the world’s knowledge workers. Our goal is to connect these Chinese professionals with each other and with the rest of LinkedIn’s 277 million members in over 200 countries and territories.”

The networking site added that it would need to censor some of its content that users post in order to comply with Chinese government rules.

LinkedIn currently has four millions Chinese users, while the wider Chinese internet market has more than 500 million users – the largest in the world. The new website plunges LinkedIn deeper into the country where rivals Facebook and Twitter are blocked – something the site will no doubt be looking to exploit.

The blog post also announced a joint venture with Sequoia China CBC “to explore expanding our business here” and added local features, such as integrating Sina and Tencent into the platform which allows members to import Weibo contacts and link WeChat accounts.
