The Conservative party is seeking to detoxify its image with some voters by relabeling themselves as the workers’ party as part of a re-branding exercise.

Party chairman Grant Shapps will announce the move later today when he is expected to say: “The Conservatives are the Workers' party and we are on your side.

“Sir John Major campaigned for what he called a 'classless society, and I would argue this is the society we are fighting for in government today: a Britain where it doesn't matter who your parents are, where you can go as far as your talents and hard work will take you, and where work – rather than benefits – is what pays."

It is hoped that in doing so the Tories can encourage more blue collar workers to vote blue, particularly in key electoral battlegrounds in the Midlands and North of England.

The existing Conservative name will be retained however and calls to replace its green oak tree logo with a ladder have been turned down.
