Nokia unveils first Android smartphone family Nokia X
Nokia has used Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to unveil its first Android smartphone Nokia X.
The Finnish handset maker, which previously focused on running Windows Phone operating systems, was snapped up by Microsoft after its mobile business suffered in the face of bitter competition from Samsung and Apple.
The phone uses a blend of Asha and Windows Phone, which can run Android apps but will not run on Google Play store but features its own app store.
The launch of Nokia X marks its first Android-based product, and has been priced at 89 euros, to capture the “fast growing, affordable” emerging smartphone markets. The device has been created to bridge the price points between its lower priced Asha phones and its more expensive, Windows-running Lumia smartphones.
Stephen Elop, executive vice president of Nokia's Devices & Services, commented on the launches: "Nokia has connected billions of people around the world, and today we demonstrated how our portfolio is designed to connect the next billion people to great experiences.
"Our deliberate approach is to offer four tiers of products including our affordable entry-level devices like the new Nokia 220; our entry-level Asha touch phones like the new Nokia Asha 230; our new Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL smartphones primarily for growth economies; and our Lumia portfolio, which is where we introduce the greatest innovation and provide full compatibility with the Microsoft experience."
The handset maker also unveiled other variations of the X family including Nokia X+ and Nokia XL smartphones, all created for emerging smartphone markets, that can run Android apps, Microsoft services such as Skype and outlook and Nokia experiences such as the Lumia tile interface and Here maps.
