Ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next week, Nokia is the brand clocking up the most mentions, with 7,584 mentions discussing the brand using the MWC hashtag (#MWC14).

This coincides with the mentions during MWC last year, which saw Nokia lead as the most talked about mobile brand, followed by Ericsson and Samsung, research from Hotwire/ 33Digital has found.

So far this year, Samsung has received 5,869 mentions, with LG and Blackberry also receiving over 1,000 mentions. Facebook closed the top five brands with 905 mentions using the hashtag.

Matt Cross, deputy MD, UK at Hotwire/ 33 Digital, said: “MWC has traditionally been the place for mobile operators and handset providers to showcase the coolest, most innovative mobile technology. However, with Mark Zuckerberg waiting in the wings to take on the keynote speech, we can expect an increasing focus on social at this year’s show.

“With Facebook’s acquisition of mobile messaging service WhatsApp this week alongside Rakuten’s acquisition of Viber, mobile giants such as Nokia and Ericsson, which dominated social chatter last year, will battle for social share of voice with non-traditional mobile and OTT providers such as Facebook and Mozilla.

“As Facebook makes its latest venture into new and emerging markets, this cross-pollination between social and mobile will raise an important question for mobile operators at MWC 2014 – do we work in competition or collaboration with Facebook in order to maintain market share?”

There has been over 31,500 mentions of the #MWC14 hashtag in the past month.
