A new app from the Independent aims to integrate the print product with digital interactivity with a design combining the title’s newspaper layout with digital practicality.

Launch: The new app from the Independent

The free app allows readers to swipe through pages and sections of the paper from start to finish and read full articles by tapping them on-screen. The app will update stories and layout three times a day on weekdays and twice a day at weekends.

Zach Leonard, managing director, digital at the Independent and Evening Standard, said: “We have responded to the demands of our readers by creating an app that is easy to use and allows them to engage with the Independent brand in the format they prefer.

“Our most considered news app yet, it is rooted in the insight that our readers expect the currency and interactivity a tablet edition can offer with the familiarity and impact of a traditional print product.”

The move follows recent growth for the Independent online, with fresh ABC figures for January showing its monthly unique users increased 12.8 per cent month on month to 13.7 million. Last month, Independent digital editor Christian Broughton told The Drum that social growth was a big part of recent online successes.
