Streamed music plays from Spotify and others to be included in compilation of UK top 40, BBC Radio 1 reveals
Streamed music from services such as Spotify will be included in the compilation of the weekly UK top 40, George Ergatoudis, head of music at BBC Radio 1, has announced.Currently, digital music downloads as well as the buying of physical copies are used in the creation of the charts, bringing the UK’s system in line with that from America. The official Billboard Top 100 in the US also includes radio airplay and YouTube plays of songs, but it is currently unknown if this will be included in the UK charts.Ergatoudis announced the move at a Radio Academy industry event, before confirming on Twitter that it would not just be Spotify used, adding that ‘other music streaming services’ will also be involved.
