Sportswear giant Nike is promising to introduce self-lacing shoes as early as 2015, according to one of the firm’s designers.

Sparing the blushes of schoolchildren Tinker Hatfield confidently predicted during an event in New Orleans that the time-saving device could be just months away from arriving in stores. He said: “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!”

Self-lacing shoes have been the holy grail of shoe manufacturers ever since Marty McFly first donned a pair in Back to the Future II, with Nike patenting its own knotty solution in 2010.

Nike’s first attempt to mimic McFly’s sneakers was made that same year and featured a built-in LED panel and Nike logo… although they relied on their wearer to lace them up.
