Three years after its release Apple is believed to be winding down production of the iPad 2.

According to reports from AppleInsider Apple has taken the decision to cease production as those looking for a cheaper alternative to the iPad Air are opting for the iPad Mini with Retina display.

Despite the iPad 2 being Apple's most-used tablet at this time, outlasting its third and fourth-generation successors, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicted the demise of the iPad 2 in November 2013.

The news that the iPad 2 will be discontinued follows claims in the press earlier this week that the iPhone 5C will be replaced in favour of cheaper version of the iPhone 5S.
