Toyota has hit the skids after the car maker was forced to recall 1.9m of its popular Prius hybrid vehicles, after a software fault which causes the cars to slow suddenly was unearthed.

Around 400 consumers in Japan and North America had reported the problem, although no accidents or injuries have arisen from the problem the manufacturer took the precautionary step of recalling the affected model.

The glitch can set off warning lights in affected cars, forcing them into a ‘failsafe mode’ in which engine power is reduced or even cut-off altogether.

It is the latest in a series of embarrassing blunders to tarnish the firms brand image and comes just weeks after it was forced to halt the sale of some models affected by faulty seat heaters.

Toyota is currently the world’s largest car maker and has been buoyed in recent months by favourable exchange rates which have raked in record profits.
