Europe accounts for 19 per cent of internet users and 16 per cent of social media users globally, research from We Are Social has found.
Europe now has almost 300m active social media users, the research found, while over 539m people in Europe use the internet.
Of these, We Are Social discovered that 193m people access social media using a mobile device.
In Western Europe – which includes UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands – there are almost 81m Facebook users, with 58 per cent of the UK on social media sites.
Internationally, it was discovered that there are over 1,858m social media users.
