Sky News is set to commemorate the centenary of World War One though Twitter by tweeting the events that took place, beginning with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914.

The account - @SkyNewsWW1 - will tweet daily updates to followers on the events that took place from 1914 to 1918.

John Ryley, head of Sky News, commented: “This is a unique idea that will provide our audiences with a simple but compelling guide on the major, and some of the less well known, events of World War One. We hope to give our twitter followers a daily glimpse of what people had to endure 100 years ago to fight for the freedom we now have the privilege to enjoy.”

Daily messages will cover news such as the start of conscription, the major battles and Christmas football matches in the trenches.
